Eligible organizations include those classified as charitable organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; or classified as an organization under Section 170(c)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code; and are located in or that provide service to residents within the seven counties of northeast Minnesota [Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis] and/or the two counties in northwest Wisconsin [Bayfield, Douglas]. Some funds have a specific geographic focus area. Some of the funds that the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation manages are:
Community Opportunity Fund - Unrestricted Endowment that benefits the community as a whole.
Fair Chance Fund- encourages and enables innovative and collaborative projects which reduce long-term dependency on public assistance programs, decrease the effects of poverty on children, and provide opportunities for economic self-sufficiency.
Fund for the Environment -reflects growing community concern and awareness of our interdependency with our environment.
Global Awareness Fund -assists projects that increase community awareness of our global interdependence and promote citizen participation in global issues.
Johns S. and James L. Knight Foundation Fund assists a wide variety of community-based projects and nonprofit organizations that would not normally receive Knight Foundation support. Potential applicants should first submit an inquiry.
Morgan Fund gives priority to projects that foster community pride or economically impact the Twin Ports in general, with a goal of making grants equally to Superior and Duluth. October 1 Second Chance Endowment Fund, takes a creative twist by making grants to qualified applicants who previously applied for, but did not receive grants, due to limited Community Foundation resources.
