Minnesota GreenCorps: an AmeriCorps Program

The MPCA is sponsoring an environmentally focused AmeriCorps program that began in September 2009.

Minnesota_GreenCorpsThe Minnesota GreenCorps provides opportunities for recent college graduates (mostly) to improve Minnesota's environment, while gaining experience and learning valuable job skills. Minnesota GreenCorps members are working on projects in the areas of:
  • Local Government Energy Conservation

  • School Waste Prevention

  • Living Green Outreach

  • Local Food Systems

  • Urban Forestry
Minnesota GreenCorps members are working for 11 months from September 2009 through August 2010 at host sites - typically cities, counties, schools and non-profit organizations - around Minnesota. These host sites were chosen during an August 2009 application period.

In this first year, the program is designed for 18 full-time members. An additional 4 part-time members who are registered University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) students are hosted at UMM's campus.

A stipend of $11,400 is provided for full-time GreenCorps members, as well as an education-related award of $4,725 for those completing their term of full-time service. (This education award can be used to pay for student loans or higher education costs.) Health insurance is also offered.

Preferred qualifications: 4- year BA/BS degree or higher in environmental-related studies, urban planning/community development, engineering, architecture, social sciences, education or communications.

Minimum qualifications: 2- year AA degree or completion of sophomore year in a 4-year college program.

Experience: Previous volunteer experience desired. Specific environmental experience not necessary.

Applications for full-time MN GreenCorps positions are no longer being accepted for this year, but another round of hiring and host site selection may occur during summer 2010.

Americorps_MinnesotaCoordination and Funding

Minnesota GreenCorps is an MPCA program funded through a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service with additional support from ServeMinnesota. Partnering in this program is University of Minnesota, Morris - Center for Small Towns.
